KELLY TANG (born Singapore, 1961) received his undergraduate training at York University (Toronto).  He was awarded a Masters' degree in Composition by Northwestern University in 1991, and received his PhD in Music at Michigan State University in 1995.  In 2008, he  was conferred the COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award by the Composers’ and Authors’ Society of Singapore. For his contribution in the Arts, Tang was conferred the Cultural Medallion in 2011 by the President of Singapore.

 

 

 

Works for Symphony Orchestra

 

 

Tang’s symphonic poem Apocalypso was premiered by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra at Singapore Arts Festival 2000, conducted by Kazimierz Kord.  In February 2008, Apocalypso was performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Finnish maestro Okko Kamu.

 

The Russian National Orchestra performed Sinfonia Concertante at the Esplanade Concert Hall in 2004, conducted by Christian Gansch.   Sinfonia Concertante was originally commissioned by the Singapore National Youth Orchestra in 1999 for its President’s Charity Concert performance at Victoria Concert Hall, conducted by Lim Yau.

 

Tang’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra was premiered by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra with pianist Lim Yan at the Esplanade on 11 February 2010, conducted by Lim Yau.  It is the first piano concerto composed by a Singaporean.

 

Montage - Three Movements for Jazz Piano & Chinese Orchestra was commissioned by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra for its Season Opening Gala Concert in August 2010, featuring soloist Jeremy Monteiro and conducted by Tsung Yeh.  Montage is the first Jazz concerto composed for Chinese Orchestra.

 

Symphonic Suite on a Set of Local Tunes was commissioned by the National Trades Union Congress for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s 2004 May Day Esplanade performance, conducted by Lim Yau.   Since then, the SSO has performed Symphonic Suite at venues as diverse as Vivocity Amphitheatre, Nanyang Auditorium, Toa Payoh Square and the Botanic Gardens Shaw Symphony Stage.  In May 2008, the SSO performed Symphonic Suite at the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Memorial Concert.

 

The Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra performed Symphonic Suite on a Set of Local Tunes at the Esplanade in November 2006, conducted by Tatsuya Shimono.  In August 2007, Symphonic Suite was performed by the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Victoria Concert Hall, conducted by Brazilian maestro Veiga Jardim.  In that same month, Symphonic Suite was performed by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra at the Hanoi Opera House.

 

During its 2008 concert tour of Italy, the Singapore National Youth Orchestra performed Symphonic Suite at the Church of St. Stefano (Florence), Montecatini Terme and the Auditorium di Milano.  Symphonic Suite was also performed at the SNYO’s Singapore Youth Festival performance at the Esplanade Concert Hall in June 2008.  In November 2008, Symphonic Suite was chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be Singapore’s representative at the ASEAN Anthem Concert at Aksra Theatre in Bangkok, where it was performed by the Royal Thai Navy Symphony Orchestra.

 

In March 2012, Symphonic Suite was again featured by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Darrell Ang, in a series of community concerts.  In August 2012, Symphonic Suite will receive its German premiere with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra conducted by Darrell Ang at the Young Euro Classic festival 2012, Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt Square, Berlin.

 

Sketches of Singapore was commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for a series of National Day concerts in August 2008, conducted by Young Associate Conductor Darrell Ang.  The National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra performed Sketches of Singapore at the National Library Atrium in September 2009, and at the University Cultural Centre on 12 September 2010.  The Millennial Orchestra performed Sketches of Singapore to an audience of over twenty thousand at Asia Conference 2008 at the Singapore Expo, and again at the Victoria Concert Hall in August 2009.

 

Tang’s original orchestration of Majulah Singapura (Singapore’s National Anthem) was commissioned by the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts in 2000 and recorded by Lan Shui and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.  Tang’s latest ceremonial orchestration of Majulah Singapura was commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2010.  It served as the grand finale for the Victoria Concert Hall Gala Closing Concert on 25 July 2010, performed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Lan Shui.

 

Tang’s orchestration of ACS Forever (the Anglo-Chinese School Anthem) was commissioned for a performance by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui at the Victoria Concert Hall on July 23rd 2009, becoming the first school anthem to be played by the SSO.

 

Tropicatto for violin and orchestra was commissioned by the Association of Banks in Singapore for the closing ceremony of the 2003 International SIBOS Conference at the Esplanade Concert Hall.  It was premiered by violinist Min Lee with the NAFA Orchestra, conducted by Richard Adams.  In March 2011, Tropicatto II was performed by the Mihail Jora Filarmonica in Romania, featuring violinist Stephan Epuran and conducted by Adrian Tan.  On April 22nd 2011, Tropicatto II was featured in a Composers’ Symposium at the Esplanade Concert Hall, performed by Lan Shui and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

 

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra has premiered several other works by Tang, including Largo for Piano and Orchestra (2001) and cog-NI-sense (2003).  Yuletide Rhapsody was commissioned for the SSO’s Chopard Christmas Concert in 2005.  In December 2006, Yuletide Rhapsody was performed by the Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra, conducted by Zechariah Goh. 

 

Tang’s orchestration of Dick Lee’s Home was commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for a special concert tribute to president SR Nathan at the Esplanade on October 2nd 2011.  In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Esplanade Theatres By The Bay, Three Symphonic Dances has been commissioned for a premiere by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in October 2012.

 

 

 

 


Chamber Music

 

 

Duo for Violin and Piano was given its US premiere at Carnegie Hall (New York) by violinist Tang Tee Khoon at her EWA International Prize-winner's Recital on April 3rd 2005, accompanied by Taiwanese pianist Pei Shan Lee.  They also featured Duo at their New England Conservatory recital that year.  Duo for Violin and Piano was premiered in Singapore by Foo Say Ming (violin) and Shane Thio (piano) at the YMS Auditorium in 1999.

 

Serenade for Winds was premiered by the Ensemble Contemporain of Montreal at the Montreal-Singapore Exchange in 2002, conducted by Veronique Lacroix.  The Magnetic Band performed Serenade for Winds at the Esplanade in August 2005.  On 1 November 2009, Serenade for Winds was featured in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra Chamber Series, performed by SSO musicians Roberto Alvarez (piccolo), Tang Xiao Ping (clarinet), Bettina Crimmins (Cor Anglais), Gao Jian (Horn) and Shannon Pittaway (trombone), conducted by Darrell Ang.

 

Quintet for Piano and Strings was commissioned for a Command House performance hosted by President Ong Teng Cheong in 1996, featuring an ensemble of prominent young musicians led by violinist Min Lee.  In 2004, Quintet was performed at Nanyang Technological University by pianist Dr Eleanor Tan with musicians from the Russian National Orchestra. In 2005, Quintet for Piano and Strings was featured in No Strings Attached, a television documentary series on Classical music, performed by the T'ang Quartet with pianist Shane Thio.

 

In August 2008, Quintet for Piano and Strings was performed at the Esplanade Recital Studio by Take Five, featuring Lim Yan (piano), Foo Say Ming (1st violin), Lim Shue Churn (2nd violin), Chan Yoong Han (viola) and Chan Wei Shing (Cello), where it garnered an encore performance.

 

Trio for Oboe, ‘Cello & Piano premiered at the Japan-Singapore International Exchange Concert on March 9th 2006 at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, organised by the Japan Federation of Composers.  It was performed by Yoshioka Obata (Oboe), Sawako Ota (Piano) and Tomoki Tai (Cello) from the Tokyo National University of Fine Art.

 

Piano Trio was premiered in 2001 by Shane Thio (piano), Chan Wei Shing (cello) and Foo Say Ming (violin) at YMS Auditorium. In 2006, Piano Trio was performed by the NAFA Contemporary Music Ensemble at the 27th International Society for Music Education (ISME) World Conference, held at the KL Convention Centre.

 

String Quartet Opus Minus 1 was premiered by the Magnetic Band at the Esplanade in August 2005, and performed again by the Artsylum Quartet at the Esplanade on 2nd September 2011.

  

Based on traditional Malay folk song motifs, Three Folk Dances for String Quartet was commissioned by the T’ang Quartet for its education & outreach performances in 2011.   In January 2012, the T’ang Quartet performed the Feet Unbound Suite and Three Folk Dances for String Quartet at the Cultural Diversity in Music Education (CDIME) International Conference.

 

 

 

 

Music for Special Events

 

 

By special invitation, Eight Decades: A Violin Fantasy was commissioned for the 80th Birthday Dinner Celebration of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew at the Shangri-la Ballroom on September 16th, 2003. It was premiered by violinist Min Lee.

 

Kallang Uproar was commissioned for a Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games premiere by the Teng Company.  In November 2010, Kallang Uproar was performed for the closing ceremony of the Singapore Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

 

Triptych: Three Passages Through Home was commissioned by the National Heritage Board for the Opening Ceremony of the Singapore Heritage Festival on 15th July 2011.  Featuring three computer-generated dance movements, Triptych portrays the major historical stages outlining Singapore’s growth as a nation.

 

 

 

 

Jazz

 

 

Two Jazz compositions, T'ang-ology and Momentum, were commissioned for a 2009 Singapore Arts Festival premiere by the Jeremy Monteiro Trio with Grammy-winning Jazz legends Randy Brecker (trumpet) and Ernie Watts (saxophone) from the USA, together with the T’ang Quartet.

 

In October 2009, the T'ang Quartet performed T'ang-ology during the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival at the Reardon Theatre in Melbourne, Australia.

 

On 8th & 9th October 2010, Jeremy Monteiro performed the solo piano rendition of Ballad (the 2nd movement of Montage) for his Esplanade solo piano recital, Alone Together.

 

 

 

Film Score

 

 

Tang composed the music score to the Australian feature film Feet Unbound, produced by Long March Films in 2007.  The score was recorded by the T’ANG Quartet.  Feet Unbound received its world premiere at the 19th International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA) where it was placed in the highest category: the Joris Ivens Competition.

 

Feet Unbound has screened at prestigious festivals worldwide, such as the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival 2006 (Greece), the Adelaide Film Festival 2006, the Yerevan International Film Festival 2007 (Armenia), the Singapore International Film Festival 2007, Cinema Digital Seoul 2007, the DocNZ Festival 2007 (New Zealand), the Sydney Film Festival 2007, the Montreal World Film Festival 2007, the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival 2007 (Germany), the Leeds International Film Festival 2007 (UK), the Mexico City International Documentary Film Festival 2008, and the Hawaiian International Film Festival 2008 (USA).

 

In October 2008, the T’ANG Quartet performed the Feet Unbound Concert Suite for President’s Star Charity 2008, a Mediacorp charity event which was broadcast live on prime-time television.  In November 2009, Feet Unbound Concert Suite was performed by the T’ANG Quartet for Singapore Encore at the Museum of Musical Instruments in Brussels, Belgium.

 

Feet Unbound screened at the Cathay Picturehouse for an unprecedented three-week extended run from 17th April to 7th May 2008.  In July 2008 and September 2009, Feet Unbound received encore screenings at the Sinema Old School.  Feet Unbound was released commercially on DVD in June 2008.

 

 

 


Compositions for Wind Band

 

 

Three Portraits for Symphonic Band was commissioned by the Ministry of Defence to commemorate “50 Years of Military Band Service in Singapore”. It was jointly premiered by the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band at the Esplanade in November 2008.  On 25 July 2010, the Republic Polytechnic Symphonic Band performed Three Portraits for Symphonic Band at the Singapore International Band Festival, Esplanade Concert Hall.

 

Shining Light was commissioned for the opening ceremony of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) International Conference 2005 at the Esplanade Concert Hall. It was premiered by the Singapore Youth Wind Orchestra conducted by Takehiro Oura.  Shining Light has been performed by the National Institute of Education Symphonic Band, the ACJC Concert Band and the Nanyang Polytechnic Wind Orchestra.  The Australian premiere of Shining Light was given by the Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra during their 2006 Coast-to-Coast concert tour, conducted by Ralph Hultgren.

 

Decathlon was commissioned for the 10th Anniversary Concert of the Philharmonic Winds at the Esplanade in April 2010, conducted by Zechariah Goh. It has also been performed by the Saints Alumni Band conducted by Benjamin Yeo, and the Victoria Junior College Concert Band.

 

Blue Horizons was commissioned by the Singapore Police Force Band for its 85th Anniversary performance at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 20th December 2010.

 

Highlandler Overture was commissioned for the 160th anniversary of St. Margaret's Secondary School in 2001.  It has since been performed by the Philharmonic Winds, the National Institute of Education Symphonic Band, the Audio Image Wind Ensemble, the ACS (Independent) Wind Ensemble and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Wind Ensemble.  The Next Octave was commissioned for the 80th anniversary of Geylang Methodist School in 2003.

 

Two Overtures for Wind Band was the commissioned set work for the Singapore Youth Festival 2009 Central Adjudication of Concert Bands, where it was performed by over 170 school bands.  Tang is the first Singaporean in seventeen years invited to compose for this prominent annual event.  Both Overtures 1 & 2 have received award-winning performances worldwide.

 

In July 2009, Overture no. 2 was selected for a Sydney Opera House command performance by the Singapore Management University Symphonia at the 20th Australian International Music Festival, conducted by David Glosz.  In August 2009, Overture no. 2 was performed at the 16th World Music Competition in Kerkrade, Holland, by both the Nanyang Technological University Symphonic Band as well as the Mus'Art Wind Orchestra.

 

Overture No. 2 was performed by Kasetsart University Wind Symphony (Bangkok) and TK Band at the Esplanade on 29th November 2009.  That same day, Overture No. 1 was performed by Maris Alumni Wind Ensemble at the Thailand International Wind Ensemble Competition.  On New Year's Day 2010, Overture no. 2 was performed by the National Institute of Education Symphonic Band at the Chiaying International Band Festival in TaiwanTwo Overtures for Wind Band was performed by the Audio Image Wind Ensemble at Singapore Wind Music Showcase on 10 January 2010. 

 

On 18 July 2010, Overture no. 1 was performed by the West Winds at the 2010 Conn-Selmer Institute Conference, conducted by Philip Tng.  In 2011, Overture no. 1 was featured in the Mediacorp television drama series Tale of Two Cities.

 

Ignition! was commissioned by the award-winning Desford Colliery Brass Band (United Kingdom) for a Brass Explosion! Festival Gala Concert premiere at the Victoria Concert Hall on 31st May 2010.

 

Wind of Change was commissioned by the National Trades Union Congress for its 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the 2011 May Day Rally held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. It was performed by the Philharmonic Winds.

 

 

 

Choral Works

 

 

Solitary Reaper was commissioned by the National Arts Council for the 1999 National Choral Seminar, where it was premiered by the Victoria Chorale conducted by Nelson Kwei. The Singapore Youth Choir performed Solitary Reaper for the 2001 Asia Pacific Symposium on Choral Music at the Victoria TheatreSolitary Reaper was performed by the Philharmonic Chamber Choir for Asia Choral Days at Tokyo Opera City in October 2002, and the Windsbacher Knabenchor (Germany) at Singapore Arts Festival 2001.  Solitary Reaper was featured in a master class by Jennifer Tham at the 2005 Karuizawa Choral Festival in Tokyo.

 

A Synchrony of Psalms was commissioned for the 40th Anniversary of the Singapore Youth Choir and premiered at the Esplanade in December 2004In 2005, the SYC performed Synchrony at the 2nd Symposium on Church Choral Music in Java.  A Synchrony of Psalms was performed by Jennifer Tham and the Gaia Philharmonic Choir at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space on October 23rd 2011.

 

Other commissions by the Singapore Youth Choir include the contemporary motets She’s Out of My Life, performed in January 2009 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, and Flying Without Wings, performed in January 2011 at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines.

 

The Snowman was commissioned by the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Choir for an Esplanade performance in May 2007.  Land of Dreams was commissioned by the ACJC Choir for the opening of the ACJC Centre of Performing Arts in May 2008.  In August 2008, The Snowman and Land of Dreams were featured by Jennifer Tham in her master class at the Summer Academy for Choral Conductors in Lithuania.  Land Of Dreams was performed by Dr. Joel Navarro and the Calvin College Capella during their 2012 tour of Asia.

 

Tyger! Tyger! Burning Bright was commissioned in 2001 by soprano Dr Eugenia Yau and pianist Prof. Christian Matijas for a series of recitals at the University of Michigan, Olivet College, the University of Texas, Northwestern University and Iowa Wesleyan University. Following that, Tyger! was sung by Dr Yau at Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore, accompanied by Shane Thio.  In April 2010, Tyger! Tyger! Burning Bright was performed by the Sing Song Club at the Esplanade Recital Studio.

 

The Daffodils was the commissioned set work for the 2006 Singapore Youth Festival Central Adjudication of Choirs, where it was performed by over 120 school choirs.  The Singapore Lyric Opera Children's Choir performed The Daffodils at the Esplanade Concert Hall in May 2007, December 2008 and July 2011.  The Daffodils was presented by the Sing Song Club at the Esplanade Recital Studio in February 2011.

 

My Shadow was the commissioned set work for the 2010 Singapore Youth Festival Central Adjudication of Choirs at the Victoria Concert Hall, where it was sung by more than 120 school choirs.  On 4 July 2010, My Shadow was performed by the Jakarta Youth & Children Chorus with the CHIJ Choir for The Spirit of Indonesia at the Esplanade Recital Studio, conducted by Jennifer Tham.  My Shadow was presented by a combined schools’ choir of over 400 singers, including the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, at the grand finale of the 2010 Singapore Youth Festival Choral Presentation at Singapore Conference Hall, conducted by Kathy Fok.

 

The Wind was the commissioned set work for the 2011 Singapore Youth Festival Central Adjudication of Choirs at the SOTA Concert Hall, where it was performed by 129 school choirs.  The Wind was featured in Celebrating Youth, a television documentary series on the Singapore Youth Festival, broadcast on the Okto Channel in June 2011.   An expanded version of The Wind for choir and wind symphony was commissioned for the Finale of the Singapore Youth Festival Choral Presentation on 15 July 2011.  In November 2011, The Wind was performed by a combined choir at the closing concert of the International Youth Choral Festival, conducted by Lim Yau.

  

 

Six Significant Landscapes was commissioned by The Singers Vocal Ensemble for their Made in Singapore recital at the Esplanade in August 2008.  The Singers performed Six Significant Landscapes for the World Youth Choral Festival at the Victoria Concert Hall in December 2008.

 

The Angel was commissioned by Jennifer Tham and the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Toa Payoh Choir) for the Internazionale in Riva del Gardachoral competition in Italy, April 2012.   Where Go The Boats? was commissioned for a 6th anniversary premiere by the Singapore Lyric Opera Children’s Choir in July 2012.

 

Opera

 

 

The Chinese Theatre Circle presented the opera Intrigues in the Qing Imperial Court on January 27th 2007, inspired by traditional Cantonese tunes and featuring a symphonic score composed by Tang.  Starring Cultural Medallion winner Joanna Wong as the Empress Dowager and conducted by Joshua Tan Kang Ming, Intrigues made history as the first Chinese opera to be sung in English and performed with a symphony orchestra.


 

 

 

Music for Strings

 

 

Two Contrasts – Concerto for Solo Violin & String Orchestra was premiered by violinist Foo Say Ming and the Re:mix String Ensemble at the Esplanade on 26th July 2009.  Re:mix performed Two Contrasts at the Shangrila Ballroom (Kota Kinabalu) in September 2009.  In October 2009, Two Contrasts was performed by Re:mix at the ARTSingapore Exhibition, Suntec City Convention Centre.

 

Spring! Year of the Rabbit was commissioned by the Re:mix String Ensemble as part of Seasons of Singapore, a collaborative project which premiered at the Esplanade Concert Hall on May 1st 2011.

 

The Re:mix string ensemble commissioned Shanghai Suite and Nat King Cole Suite for a world premiere at Prince Songkla University in Thailand, and a Singapore premiere at the Esplanade in December 2007.  Both suites have been widely performed by Re:mix, and by the string orchestras of Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Institute of Management.  The Singapore National Youth Orchestra performed Shanghai Suite at the Kangxi Emperor: Treasures of the Forbidden City exhibition in March 2009, at the Asian Civilisations Museum.

 

Hollywood Magic Suite was commissioned by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for its 2008 Benefit Dinner Concert at the Saint Regis Hotel Ballroom.

 

 

 

Contributions to the Arts

 

 

In 2001, Tang was appointed to the founding Board of Directors of the Arts House at Old Parliament.  From 2001 to 2004, he served in the committee for establishing the School of the Arts (SOTA), appointed by the Minister for Communications and the Arts.  As a member of the National Arts Council Resource Panel from 2001 to 2009, he was appointed to committees for the Singapore Arts Festival, the NAC Arts Awards, the Shell/NAC Scholarship Awards and the Arts Research and Development Funding Scheme. 

 

Since 2008, Tang has served on the Board of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.  In March 2006, he was appointed by the Singapore Ambassador to the Russian Federation as part of a cultural delegation tasked with forging links with prominent Russian composers and arts institutions.   He served as chairman of the committee for the 2011 National Piano & Violin Competition.

 

Tang’s works are taught as part of the school music curriculum, being a featured Singaporean composer in music textbooks prescribed by the Ministry of Education.  These include Music Alive! Exploring the World of Sound (2007) and First Steps to Music (2008).  In 2009, three volumes of Tang's recorded works and a collection of scores were digitally archived by the National Library Board for public access.

 

Tang’s impact in music education runs the entire gamut, from lecturing at Northwestern University and Michigan State University in the USA, to teaching at Raffles Junior College and St. Theresa's Convent in Singapore. Tang has served as advisor to the Ministry of Education in designing the GCE 'A', 'O' and 'N' level Music syllabus.  He also served on the Music Curriculum Development Committees for Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LaSalle School for the Arts.

 

Tang has mentored young composers and conducted composition workshops at Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Raffles Junior College, Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls’ School, National Junior College, Temasek Junior College, Dunman High School, Cresent Girls’ School and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He has composed and orchestrated the anthems of over a dozen schools.

 

Grounded upon a wide array of contemporary composing techniques, Tang's eclectic style springs from a confluence of diverse sources including Schenkerian Theory, Parametric Analysis, Dodecaphonic procedures, Classical form and Baroque Counterpoint.  His music draws inspiration from his multi-faceted experience in Rock album production, Jazz performance, Chinese/Malay folk song orchestration and South Indian drumming under the tutelage of legendary Mrdangam virtuoso Trichy Sankaran.
