Associate
Professor Eugene Dairianathan
Eugene Dairianathan
was awarded a Research Scholarship by NTU to pursue his doctoral
studies in Music. The successful completion made him the first Ph.D.
Graduate in Music to be awarded by NTU in Singapore. Although his
initial training was in the specialization of Music Theory and
Analysis, he has worked in situations that have broadened
prior-acquired skills. His research interests have grown to encompass
interdisciplinary perspectives of Music, given his participation in
varied and diverse aspects of musics and
musical practices. Shortly after the award of the PhD in 1997, Eugene
was appointed Conference Secretariat to the Asian Music and Dance
Conference in Education and later acted as editor for the papers given
at that conference in a publication released in July 1999.
In 2000, he was invited to Gothenburg University,
Sweden, as their Visiting Scholar; and again in 2002 to participate in
a Music and Sociology Conference to make a presentation of musical
practices in Singapore. Later in 2002, Eugene was a co-recipient of a National
Arts Council Research Grant, A Narrative History of Music in Singapore;
1819 to the present. This culminated in a technical report which was
submitted to NAC in 2005. This opportunity has made him reposition his
research agenda in a life-long study of musical practices where
learning takes place in, about, by and for all known musical practices.
In 2002, Eugene was also invited to contribute a book chapter towards a
publication on Musicianship in the 21st century (Leong 2003). This book
chapter which has as its subject a non-music specialist constituency
enabled in improvisation has since allowed Eugene opportunities to
present at international conferences as well as have publications in
peer-reviewed international conference proceedings.
Eugene has organized many arts-related events at
NIE level, including an NIE-wide contribution to arts performances in
conjunction with National Day celebrations in 2000. Since 1997, he has
been responsible for organising concerts,
gallery exhibitions, theatre performances, traditional and contemporary
dance presentations, seminars, workshops and collaborative arts
performances under the ExxonMobil-NTU Explorations in the Arts Series.
His role in these arts-related events has also enabled interaction and
exchanges with local and locally-based international communities;
British Council, Goethe-Institut, Musica Viva Australia, American Chamber of Commerce
(Cultural Affairs), Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Armed Forces
(Music and Drama Company), Young Musicians Society, Singapore
Polytechnic and Singapore Symphony Orchestra (Education and Outreach).
Internationally, he was also invited to
participate at the Senior Managers Symposium of the European League of
the Institute of the Arts (ELIA) to share his views on leadership and
management; first to Los Angeles in 2003 and subsequently in Hong Kong
in December 2007. Eugene is currently Associate Professor and Music
coordinator in the Visual and Performing Arts Academic Group at NIE,
NTU.
