EDDY CHONG teaches courses primarily related to music theory and analysis at
diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A recipient of the Overseas
Graduate Scholarship from NTU-NIE, Eddy completed his doctorate in Music
Theory at the Eastman School of Music. His thesis develops a Schenkerian
approach for the analysis of Ravel's piano music. He has since presented
further research on Ravel at conferences in Australia
and Finland.
His book chapter, "Contextualizing Ravel" has recently been
published in Music Research: New Directions for a New Century (Cambridge
Scholars Press, 2004).
Motivated by his belief
in integrating the learning of music theory and analysis with composing, he
has taken an interest in developing a pedagogical model for teaching
composing based on Fux's species counterpoint method. Applicational ideas
at various levels—primary, secondary and tertiary—have been
presented at conferences both overseas and locally, some of which will be
published shortly.
His current new area of
research is blogging as an instructional strategy. He has presented his
research on (edu)-blogging in music teaching at various conferences
including the Association of Technology in Music Instruction 30th
Conference in Quebec City, Canada (2005). His book chapter "Adaptive
Learning through Blogging: A Case Study in Music Teaching" has just
been published in Redesigning Pedagogy: Voice of Practitioners (2007).
Prior to his doctoral
studies, Eddy taught and co-ordinated the Music Elective Programme at the Raffles Junior College, where he also
conducted the RJC Ensemble which won certificates of distinction at the
Singapore Youth Festival competitions. Currently, besides lecturing and
supervising at NIE, he has shared his knowledge at enrichment sessions for
"O" level music teachers and band directors, and has given a
number of SSO pre-concert talks. In his weekends, he conducts his church
choir and plays the organ for service.
